The Cheongju International Craft Biennale Organizing Committee will hold the Cheongju International Craft Biennale 2007 from Oct. 2~28. The Cheongju International Craft Biennale Organizing Committee invite both new and established artists the world over to take part in the competition. They will lead the craft world in the 21st century with their creativity, and we expect their strong interest and enthusiastic participation.

Creative evolution is, above all, a new interpretation of evolution. In fact, tracing the history of life s evolution, Bergson reveals the organic order inherent in life, namely the principle of life s incessant change, growth, and expansion in its stream and its continuous recreation. It was a denial of the determinism in the progression of human life and the world and instead a proposition of the principle of life, which is flexible, organic, and circular. It communicates an idea of ecology based on the concept of a new creation.

In this sense, craft is inherent to humans in that it best represents the ecological principle of self-generation. The idea of Homo faber as an explanation of basic human behavior has gained renewed attention in the 21st century because the very behavior of making tools has been expanded into the concept of the order of life with emphasis on its value. The creative evolution of human beings through craft, or the creative evolution of craft itself, starts with the making of tools with materials that are the smallest and slowest and thus the most natural. In the process of tool making, the evolution progresses, constantly transforming itself and gradually accumulating and expanding its energy with the force of the circulation of life.

The ecological value of craft is proposed as an alternative to the rationalism that dominated the world order of the 20th century, and economic values that emphasize development. Maximizing the force of the natural and making the principle of life a channel of new energy, craft is making its true meanings come alive even more strongly in the 21st century.

The Cheongju International Craft Biennale will focus on the inherent meaning of craft and the order of life as well as its ecological values, in pursuit of change and growth of its genuine meanings. It will not seek some quick and visible results; rather, it will lead to the deep, slow, and invisible energy in nature and the universe in its uninterrupted flow.
